Eskom (Sishen - Saldanha)

Eskom needs to construct five substations and loop in and loop out lines between Sishen and Saldanha in order to increase power supply to the upgraded railway line. Transnet Freight Rail needs to increase the capacity of the Sishen-Saldanha railway line from 29 Mega Tons per year up to 67 Mega Tons per year. This requires substantial increase in the number of locomotives that run within different supply loops at given time intervals. The Sishen- Saldanha traction upgrade project involves the establishment of five new substations between Sishen and Saldanha. Transnet Freight Rail requires these new substations to reduce the physical length of the 50kv reticulation system which in turn allows for increased load ability of the 50Kv system. Turn-in-Lines (275/400kV) are also required both “in” and “out” to link the proposed five substations with the existing network. The size of each substation will be a maximum of 500m X 500m.
